Petrichor Play Choir brings community singing to Dungog

PETRICHOR Play Choir will host an open trial session for new singers on Sunday 14 December from 1pm to 4pm at the Anglican Church in Dungog.

The once-a-month sing-along invites locals of all ages, genders and abilities to experience the warm, uplifting energy of community singing, with no prior experience needed.

The Petrichor Choir, well-known for its thriving community groups in Newcastle and Maitland, focuses on making music accessible, fun and truly inclusive.

Musical Director Christopher Sutherland, a multi-instrumentalist, composer and educator, leads the choir with a focus on creativity, community and joy.

“What we’re offering is a space where anyone can walk in, regardless of experience, and feel the joy of creating something together,” said Christopher.
“Singing in [a] community reminds us that music belongs to everyone, and Dungog feels like the perfect place to grow that spirit.”

Christopher explains the approach as centering on teaching songs by ear, breaking each piece down “little by little at a pace everyone can keep up with.”

The method is designed to provide people, who have never sung outside the shower, with confidence.

Participants can expect to explore heartfelt and pop songs from around the globe, sung both a cappella and with instrumental accompaniment.

With a repertoire that spans cultures and styles, the choir aims to create not just beautiful harmonies but a sense of connection among its singers.

While the trial in Dungog promises to be a low-pressure afternoon of fun, the broader goal of the Petrichor Play Choir is to offer space for people to develop their vocal and ensemble skills, without formality or pressure.

Organisers hope the trial run will spark enough interest to establish a regular monthly singing group in Dungog, adding a new creative outlet to the community’s growing cultural scene.

Whether you’re a seasoned singer or complete beginner, the Petrichor Play Choir invites you to come along, find your voice and discover the joy of singing together.
