DUNGOG Shire Council is taking proactive steps to address parking concerns in Dowling Street, Dungog following feedback from local retailers regarding the availability of main street CBD parking spaces.
Concerns have been raised that retail employees are occupying these spaces for extended periods, making it difficult for customers to access businesses in the area.
“Council acknowledges the important role that convenient parking plays in supporting a thriving retail environment and is committed to working with local businesses to find solutions that benefit the entire community,” Council said in a statement.
Therese McIntyre, President of the Dungog Chamber of Commerce, emphasised the importance of cooperation among retailers.
“It’s crucial that we all support each other by ensuring customers have easy access to parking,” Ms McIntyre said.
“We encourage all business owners and employees to park outside of the main street CBD parking areas so that our customers can visit and support all businesses in Dowling Street.
“A small change in where we park can make a big difference in attracting and retaining customers.”
The Dungog Traffic Committee, consisting of Council representatives and retailers in the area, installed line markings on the street to maximise parking spaces earlier this year, while Council installed signage to highlight the two-hour parking limit.
Dungog Shire Council General Manager, Gareth Curtis, said, “At present, Council is taking a lenient approach to enforcing the two-hour parking limit, recognising the need for education and cooperation first.
“However, if the issue persists, we will consider enforcing penalties to ensure that parking in Dowling Street remains accessible for customers who wish to shop and support local businesses,” Mr Curtis said.
