Letter to the Editor: Owen Nicholson’s life of service

DEAR News Of The Area,

OWEN Nicholson was a man who rarely, if ever, said “no.”

His response was more likely to be, “We can do that – not a worry.”

That simple phrase captured the spirit of a man whose unwavering dedication, tireless commitment, and generous contribution to the Dungog district inspired everyone who knew him.

Having lived in the Dungog Shire all his life, Owen’s connection to the community ran deep.

He believed strongly in the value of community spirit and the importance of lending a hand wherever it was needed.

For Owen, it was never about recognition or reward – it was about helping others and strengthening the place he proudly called home.

For almost 25 years, Owen served as Secretary of the Dungog Show, a role he carried out with remarkable dedication.

During that time, he worked tirelessly to maintain the showgrounds and preserve the heritage of an event that has long been a cornerstone of community life in the district.

His efforts helped ensure that the show continued to bring people together, celebrating the traditions, agriculture, and community pride that define the region.

Owen was also a valued friend and mentor to the younger generation.

He never hesitated to share his knowledge, offer guidance, and lend encouragement to those starting out.

Many young people benefited from his wisdom, patience, and quiet support.

Yet above all his many contributions to the community, Owen was a devoted family man who cherished the people closest to him.

Those who worked alongside Owen remember his reliability, his practical approach, and his willingness to step forward whenever something needed to be done.

Whether it was organising events, maintaining the grounds, or quietly helping behind the scenes, Owen’s presence could always be counted on.

For Owen, life was not about getting – it was about giving.

He gave his time, his passion, and his love to a community he truly cared about.

His legacy lives on in the showgrounds he helped preserve, in the events he helped sustain, and in the many people whose lives he touched through his generosity and commitment.

The Dungog district is richer for Owen Nicholson’s lifetime of service, and his example of quiet dedication and community spirit will not be forgotten.

Regards,

Bruce NEILSON.
