DEAR News Of The Area,
SONJA Duncan’s letter in the of News Of The Area ‘Rights are not a zero-sum game’, (page 13, 3/6/26) gave me the impetus to re-play Alison Penfold’s recent speech to Parliament about her private members’ bill proposing changes to the sex discrimination act.
I also re-read Ms Duncan’s letter a couple of times.
For myself, Ms Penfold’s arguments came across as solid, based on reality and convinced me far more than Ms Duncan’s letter, which opposed the proposed changes.
I would like to be sure that women do not have to compete with biological males in sports and that hard-won women’s spaces are not penetrated by males either.
It seems logical to me that a solid definition of sex and gender, based on biological reality, is a good place to start any discussions.
Making provision for the continuing and expanding variant groups can continue on from there, probably for a long time.
Regards,
Brian Lewis,
Gloucester River.
