A NEW campaign has been launched to support Australian women experiencing perimenopause and menopause.
Perimenopause and menopause affect women differently, with symptoms ranging from hot flushes and sleep disturbances to anxiety, brain fog and changes to mental health and wellbeing.
The campaign aims to improve understanding, reduce stigma and help women access reliable health information and support.
A recent Federal inquiry found many women entered perimenopause and menopause with limited knowledge about symptoms, treatment options and available support services.
Minister for Finance and Women Katy Gallagher said the campaign addressed a long-standing gap in women’s health awareness.
“Menopause should not come as a surprise, but for too long silence and stigma have left too many women in the dark,” Minister Gallagher said.
“Making sure women have credible, evidence-based information that is easily accessible is essential to supporting their health and wellbeing. And it’s important for women’s families and the broader community to have awareness too.”
The campaign has been developed in consultation with health experts and women with lived experience to ensure it reflects the diverse ways menopause and perimenopause are experienced.
The campaign is part of the Government’s $792.9 million women’s health package.
Since related reforms were introduced, more than 430,000 women have accessed cheaper menopausal hormone therapies through the PBS, collectively saving more than $70 million, while almost 105,000 women have undertaken a Medicare-funded menopause health assessment.
