IN 2016, a small group of artists came together to share a vision of a space that could support and nurture Dungog Shire’s creative spirit.
Ten years on, that modest dream is Dungog By Design, a ground-breaking, not-for-profit artisan collective that’s become a pillar of the local cultural landscape.
“Over the last decade, Dungog By Design has evolved far beyond a traditional gallery space to show our work,” spokesperson Pamela Priday said.
“We contribute sponsorships, make donations, host themed exhibitions and frequently collaborate with other artistic bodies to present innovative exhibitions and skill-based workshops.”
The gallery’s early success stemmed from the strong leadership and direction of founding president Donna Cavanagh.
Since taking the helm, Liz Hughes has built on that foundation, guiding operations with robust policies and procedures, strengthening teamwork, and fostering a collaborative spirit that sees the group’s operations managed seamlessly.
The unwavering patronage and support of Tracy Norman and Bernadette Skuse has bolstered Dungog By Design’s decade-long journey, helping to foster a thriving, connected artisan community across the region.
The group boasts 37 exhibiting members and six social members, who review operations and plan future activities at monthly meetings.
It relies entirely on the dedication of volunteers, who staff the gallery five days a week.
The group celebrated its 10-year milestone at last week’s annual general meeting. The executive comprises Liz Hughes (chair), Anne Balmer (vice chair), Alexandra Wade (secretary), and Sandra Lolopolous (treasurer).
Along with discussions on ways to encourage artistic creativity at grassroots level, particularly among local children, the 19 members in attendance decided to help fund Dungog’s free community Christmas lunch.
It will also support Sculpture On The Farm next August, sponsoring the $1000 Youth Prize.
Based on Dowling Street, Dungog By Design is open to the public from Wednesday to Sunday. Updates on its activities can be found on Facebook and Instagram.
Paintings from Cynthia Denning’s ‘In the Frame’ exhibition are on show during October.
