Dungog Science Hub launches new series of climate lectures

A NEW series of lectures centred around climate change action has launched at the James Theatre.

The Climate Choice series is a new series of lectures that are a collaboration between the Paterson Allyn Williams Science & Ideas Hub (PAWSIH) and community advocacy group, Lyne Together.

The talks aim to inform the Dungog community and are the brainchild of PAWSIH member, David Smith.

“I believe in giving [out] information,” said Mr Smith.

The first lecture titled “Climate Facts, Consequences & Choices Ahead” took place on Sunday, 5 July.

The guest lecturers were retired CSRIO atmospheric scientist and director of the Citizen Climate Lobby, Dr Dennys Angrove, as well as Graham Creed, a local weather expert with 30 years of experience working with the Bureau Of Meteorology and the Australian Broadcasting Association.

Together they turned the complex science behind the greenhouse effect and weather forecast models into an engaging and well-received talk to the community.

Mr Smith said he had set out  to help the community fully understand the science behind climate change.

“The idea just hit me,” Mr Smith said.

“We were thinking about something like this.

“So it was like – let’s just kick it off.”

After the event, Dr Angrove and Mr Creed answered questions from an enthusiastic and interested crowd filled with members  who were eager to know what they could do to help their community take action against climate change.

This, in turn, was another goal of Mr Smith’s.

Speaking to NOTA after the event, he said that his ultimate goal of the lecture series was to see real action from the community to benefit the community.

The next lecture in the series is set to kick off in September.
