Dungog Library to celebrate NAIDOC Week with community activities

DUNGOG Library will host a community celebration for NAIDOC Week on Friday 10 July, with a program of cultural activities, performances and workshops for all ages.

The event will begin at 10am with a Welcome to Country and smoking ceremony led by Uncle Justin Ridgeway in the library grounds.

Deputy Mayor Liam Ley said everyone was invited to attend the community celebration.

“Everyone’s invited to … the library to celebrate NAIDOC Week,” Cr Ley said.

Following the opening ceremony, the program will continue from 10.30am with didgeridoo performances, community yarns and light refreshments.

Visitors will then move inside the library for a range of free family activities, including weaving, story time and clay workshops with Cara Clements.

“There’ll be didgeridoo performances, community yarns, there’ll be some light refreshments, and then everyone will be heading inside and there’ll be a range of free family fun activities,” Cr Ley said.

The event is designed to provide opportunities for people to learn about Aboriginal culture while bringing the community together during NAIDOC Week.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity to come together, learn, connect, and celebrate NAIDOC Week, which is what the whole week is about,” he said.

Residents interested in attending are encouraged to contact Dungog Library for further information about the day’s activities.

The celebration is open to all members of the community and forms part of local NAIDOC Week events recognising Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, culture and achievements.
