Billy carts and books: Dungog Shire’s holiday favourites

IT’S time to check and re-check the brakes on that old billy cart in the shed as Gresford counts down to its own “fast and furious” street race.

Organised by the Rotary Club of Dungog, the 24th Billy Cart Derby is being held on Easter Saturday 4 April.

It is open to all ages and is the highlight of an event that also attracts market stalls and food vendors.

Last year’s Derby was a big success, with the club recalling a “a great crowd, incredible racers [and] next-level cart builds).

In addition, $15,000 was raised for community causes.

This year’s major recipient is the Gresford P&C.

It needs funds to support additional learning opportunities in the small country school.

Racers can enter on the day, although the club recommends checking out its website at “gresfordbillycartderby.wordpress.com” to download registration forms and to get answers to questions like, “can my tyres be different sizes” and “do I need to wear safety gear?”

The races mean there will be traffic delays in East Gresford with vehicles able to pass through every 25 minutes between 7am and 12.45pm, when the road will reopen.

Storytime

Meanwhile, for those children and parents who prefer quieter activities, Dungog Library is planning a special school holiday Storytime session.

On 8 April, a real firefighter (and maybe their fire truck) will visit to talk to young readers about the work they do, how brave they have to be, and how the community can help keep everyone safe.

The session starts at 10.30am.
