Champion riders chasing bucks and points at Stroud Rodeo

RODEO competitors from across Australia will be chasing over $50,000 in prize money at the 51^st annual Stroud Rodeo at Stroud Showground next Friday and Saturday, September 18 and 19.

The 2026 event is shaping up to be one of the biggest ever, with full camp draft and rodeo programs, family entertainment, 45 food and trade stalls, and live music.

“It will be a huge weekend for Stroud and the Hunter Valley,” event spokesperson Katie Gorton said.

“We have national champions taking part in almost every event, with points, money and bragging rights up for grabs.”

For the first time, spectators will also see the Ladies Ranch Saddle Bronc Ride on the program.

Junior and novice competitors take to the ring on Friday, with the full-points rodeo on Saturday.

More than 400 bull and bronc riders are expected to compete on stock supplied by Branxton’s Fitzsimmons brothers.

Among the entrants are current and former champions, including Lane Edwards, Tony Leeke, Singleton’s Josh Barnett, and Heath Nichols.

“The $7000 Open Bull Ride feature event has attracted some of the toughest competitors and bulls,” Ms Gorton said.

“Adding even more excitement will be the $3000 Open Shoot Out, with prize money across three placings.”

Crowd favourite Big Al the Comedy Clown also returns to Stroud’s international standard venue, which boasts all-weather seating.

Around the showground there’ll be plenty to see, eat and do. Along with loads of food and trade stalls, children’s rides help make the event one for the whole family.

Once the dust settles, Carrot Bowen and The Collective will take to the stage.

Organisers are hoping for more of the Lower Hunter’s sun-soaked early Spring weather.

“We’re keeping our fingers crossed,” Katie’s brother, Dave told NOTA.

“Last year we were all wearing gumboots. This year, we’d like to be in leather.”
