DUNGOG’S hills and fields are sporting a vibrant palette of green hues as Spring arrives in the valley following a warm, wet winter.
The greenery inspired the theme for the 2026 collaborative exhibition Green Space by the artists and artisans of Dungog by Design.
The exhibition was opened last Saturday afternoon at the Dowling Street gallery by Michelle Dado-Millynn, a local environmental activist, visual storyteller, educator, and film producer.
She commented on the eclectic mix of art forms by the 20 exhibitors represented: painting, jewellery, textiles, woodwork and weaving that showcased the organic outburst of creative energy that comes with Spring in the shire.
Dungog by Design president Liz Hughes said artistic creativity plays an important role in the community, providing an outlet for creatives to express, explore and celebrate their sense of place and identity.
“Art can be more than just an aesthetic activity,” she said.
“It can also be an important form of cultural expression that builds community connection.
“Green Space is an example of creative practice bringing people together to create opportunities for sharing local stories, histories and perspectives in new ways.
“Our curation team has again done a fabulous job showcasing the diverse works created for the exhibition.
“I’m really impressed by the artistic quality on show.”
The launch crowd was slightly larger than anticipated, perhaps because it was Tea Party weekend.
Even the conversations were tinged with green: Topics such as climate, El Niño, solar power and living off-grid surfaced among art-inspired conversations triggered by the exhibits.
Green Space runs until September 27 and is open Wednesday to Friday 10am – 4pm, and on Saturday and Sunday from 9am till 3pm, with many of the items for sale.
