James Theatre celebration marks ten years of Dungog community action

DUNGOG advocates for ‘people and planet’ celebrated a decade of action in a multi-faceted gathering at Dungog’s iconic James Theatre earlier this month.

Four groups – Boomerang Bags Dungog, PAW Science and Ideas Hub, Dungog By Design and Gresford Arboretum – all celebrated milestone founding anniversaries in 2026.

They decided to plan the party together and celebrate as one; complete with birthday cake and beverages.

The event’s theme was “10 years of caring for people and planet across our shire”.

Representatives from each of the four birthday groups gave a presentation to the crowd.

The James, Australia’s oldest, purpose-built, continuously-operating theatre, was the ideal venue to showcase short films made by Dungog high school students.

These films were part of the Power of Activism program, which can be seen on SBS.

After the presentation, everyone was encouraged to mingle behind the screen.

Nearly 20 local organisations, including the four birthday groups, featured at the event.

Information on a broad range of topics was provided by stalls set up by the various organisations.

Groups as diverse as Dungog Shire Council, the Country Women’s Association and the Growers Stall attended.

There was something to interest people of all ages, with wildcrafting activities for the children.

Dungog photographer Ken Rubeli dropped in for the event.

“Connecting to community, and keeping [the groups] going for 10 years, is a triumph,” Mr Rubeli said.

Ambient instrumental music was provided by Dungog High School students and two local musicians.
