THE perceptive among your many readers must have noticed my letter regarding the fire risk posed to Dungog township by the Dungog Common.
I have since had local folks saying, “Yes, that needs to be attended to”.
However, I have had an e-mail from the Office of the Assistant Deputy Commissioner Viki Campbell AFSM, to inform me that, in so many words, there is nothing to worry about, and that they have it all under control!
It is passing strange that an Assistant Deputy Commissioner can see no problem when people who live right beside the Common, and are right in the firing line when it does catch fire, most certainly can.
Even in the very next issue of your journal, the main headline says,” START NOW. Firies warn residents to assess bushfire risk”.
Very much a case of, “Oh, they’re only locals, what would they know?”
If it is the flora in the Common they are concerned about, then if it is native bush, then there can be no worry. Native plants thrive on fire.
If it’s koalas etc that raises their concern, then a cool burn allows the fauna to scuttle into shelter. A quiet, cool burn is better than a raging inferno, any time.
The original people of this land have known that since time began.
I repeat: The Time is Now.
