Wallarobba RFB celebrates 90 years of community firefighting

THE Wallarobba Rural Fire Brigade celebrated its 90th anniversary on Saturday, 20 September, with 107 people in attendance for a day of history, community spirit, and bushfire preparedness.

The milestone event also coincided with the Rural Fire Service’s (RFS) Get Ready Day, with children receiving handouts to help families prepare for the 2025/26 bushfire season.

Formed during a devastating fire season in 1934/35, the then Wallarobba Bush Fire Brigade was born from necessity.

The first meeting took place in the home of Duncan Fraser, across the road from where the current station stands today on Brookfield Road.

Early firefighting relied on milk cans filled with water, hessian sacks, and horse-drawn slides carrying 44-gallon drums.

There was no personal protective equipment of any kind.

Over the decades, the brigade has evolved alongside the community it serves.

In 1964, members acquired their first firefighting trailer, and in 2005, the brigade took delivery of its very first new fire truck, a dual cab Canter, which was proudly on display at Saturday’s celebrations.

The brigade has also been shaped by its leaders.

Captains since its founding include Lewis DeWarren Waller (1935), Allan Wansey (1948), Doug Eyb (1970), Warren Marquet (1996), and current Captain Jo-Anne McDonald, who has served since 2002.

“Saturday’s celebration wasn’t just about looking back, it was about honouring the dedication of past and present members and inspiring the next generation of volunteers,” said Captain McDonald.

“We are proud to have served this community for 90 years, and we welcome anyone who wants to join us in keeping Wallarobba safe.”

The event was supported by sponsorship from the Rural Fire Service Association.
