Reminder for boaties and fishers

WHETHER headed down to the Williams River or hitching up for a trip to Lostock Dam, the NSW Police Marine Area Command is asking fishers from Dungog and surrounds to complete a check of their vessels before heading out.

“A few minutes spent preparing before departure to ensure your vessel is suitable, seaworthy and prepared for the forecast conditions can make all the difference to a safe and enjoyable day on the water,” said Member for Upper Hunter, Dave Layzell.

Vessel owners and operators should ensure all required safety equipment is onboard, is within date and fully operational. This might include life jackets and flares.

Inspect the vessel’s battery and electrical systems to ensure they are functioning correctly, and check that you have clean, suitable and sufficient fuel for your intended trip.

Before departing, check the latest weather conditions; confirm your mobile phone, marine radio and other communication equipment are operational; and let a family member or friend know where you are going and your expected return time.

“Be prepared,” Mr Layzell said.

“Stay safe. Get home safely.”
