Dirt bike engines can now be classed as ‘offensive noise’

IF you or a member of your household are off-road dirt bike enthusiasts, the Member for Upper Hunter, Dave Layzell, encourages you to familiarise yourself with changes to NSW Environment Protection Authority noise regulations.

In his State Matters newsletter, Mr Layzell acknowledges the popularity of the bikes but warns that the laws have changed.

“While riding dirt bikes off-road might be super fun for enthusiasts, if you get really loud and disruptive, and can be heard from inside a neighbour’s house, there is a chance it could be classed as offensive noise,” Mr Layzell wrote.

“Under new rules, the owner or occupier of the property where the bike is being ridden could be responsible for keeping the noise under control.”

Mr Layzell pointed out that agricultural vehicles, and motor vehicles and bikes entering and leaving a property, were exempt.

The changes are part of wider reforms to NSW noise regulations that are now in effect.
