THE Dungog RSL sub-Branch has received NSW Government funding to help ensure that two of the town’s most solemn and beautiful memorials will remain as monuments to the service and sacrifice of armed forces personnel for generations to come.
The sub-Branch was awarded almost $30,000 through the NSW Government’s Community War Memorials Fund, with $14,982 destined for the Dungog Memorial Arches and $15,000 for the Christ Church Second World War Memorial Gate.
“Thank you to the NSW Government for funding to support the conservation and preservation of the Christ Church Second World War Memorial Gate and the Dungog Memorial Arches,” said Dungog RSL sub-Branch president Neil Tickle.
“These memorials hold a special place in the Dungog community, recognising the service and sacrifice of local men and women who served our nation.
“The funding will help ensure these important landmarks are carefully conserved, protecting their heritage significance and maintaining their role as places of remembrance for future generations.”
The funding program was established in 2008 and, since that time, grants have been provided for a wide range of projects including conservation assessments, honour roll repair, war memorial cleaning and conservation work, arborist advice for war memorial trees, minor repairs to war memorial halls and improvements to the accessibility of memorials.
Grant applications were assessed by the State War Memorials Committee, which is comprised of senior representatives of the Returned and Services League of Australia NSW Branch (RSL NSW), NSW Public Works, Heritage NSW and the NSW Office for Veterans Affairs.
The NSW Government’s Community War Memorials Fund website stated that the Dungog Memorial Arches funds had been provided for conservation works including an at-height assessment, cleaning, repointing and repainting.
The Christ Church Second World War Memorial Gate’s grant had been provided to fund cleaning, repairs, the restoration of lead lettering, and a carpentry assessment.
Altogether, 48 memorials across 25 local government areas received nearly $285,000 for essential conservation to war memorials across NSW.
Applications for the 2027/28 Community War Memorials Fund will open in April 2027.
