CAMERON Archer will combine his twin passions for tourism and history when he launches a local history podcast series, and the first in an ongoing series of local history articles is published in Dungog News Of The Area later this month.
Chair of Dungog Regional Tourism, Mr Archer is a published author. However, podcasts will be a first.
“Our shire has a rich and fascinating past,” Mr Archer said.
“To ensure all of the shire was covered, the initial series features the history of each of its villages, Clarence Town, Gresford, Vacy and Paterson, as well as the town of Dungog.
“They’ll be an excellent introduction to the broader history of the shire.”
The podcast series will be launched at a function at Radio House Dungog on Sunday, 20 September at 3pm.
Funded by the Community Broadcasting Foundation, the podcast is a collaboration between the tourism body and Radio Dungog.
It relied on the cooperation and assistance of the Clarence Town Historical Society, Gresford Historical Society, Dungog Historical Society, and the Paterson Historical Society.
Supported by Dungog Regional Tourism, the podcasts draw on the audio production skills of Radio Dungog and Therese Sweeney, an experienced historian and local history podcast producer.
The narrator is Radio Dungog’s vice president, Michael Beaumont.
Working with Mr Archer, Radio Dungog president, Nola McDonald led the project.
Initially to be broadcast by Radio Dungog, the series will also be available on its website.
The project follows Radio Dungog’s relocation to Radio House, the former Girl Guides Hall in Dungog Showground.
The launch of the podcast and News Of The Area articles will coincide with Dungog Regional Tourism’s release of a brace of new brochures, site information boards, and maps of the shire.
News Of The Area Group Editor, Eve Nesmith said the media group is delighted to be working with Mr Archer to present his articles each fortnight.
“Cameron’s personal association with the district and his love of local history are well known and respected,” Ms Nesmith said.
“As chair of Dungog Regional Tourism he will bring a multifaceted view to the stories he’ll write for Dungog News Of The Area.
“I’m sure shire residents and visitors will appreciate how the people and events of the shire’s past have helped shape the beautiful region they know today.”
