DUNGOG and District residents are concerned that the iconic Vacy Bridge may be replaced as part of the NSW Government’s current timber truss bridge management strategy.
While surrounding historical bridges in the Dungog local government area – such as the Brig O’Johnston Bridge (Clarence Town), the Cooreei Bridge (Dungog), and the Monkerai Bridge – have been retained for long-term heritage conservation, Vacy Bridge has been earmarked for a modern upgrade to meet changing regional transport demands.
Both Paterson and Vacy are on the front lines of growth and change.
While this growth is being embraced, with many people looking forward to positive change, others are torn between evolution and preserving the stories, the history, and the environments beloved by locals.
Julie Overton, a Paterson local, is concerned that the Vacy Bridge may be lost.
“It’s about identity as well,” Ms Overton said.
“It’s not just a bridge. It’s about story-telling and connection.”
Others have a more pragmatic approach, such as Rhylee Knox from Vacy.
“It would be nice to keep the historical bridge as it is, and we don’t need more roadworks,” she said.
Alongside this in Paterson community are the current works proposed in King Street.
Here there are three trees that sit directly in front of the curb opposite Paterson Chemist.
Research from the Paterson Historical Society indicates that the trees are at least 70 years old.
The question locals are asking is: does Dungog Shire Council intend to remove them? Will the community be consulted about future development in the area?
The Community Builders Group in Paterson operates on the premise that locals have expert local knowledge and need to be consulted as proposals arise prior to work commencing.
