PALLIATIVE Care Week between 11-17 May, also marks the 30th anniversary of Dungog Shire’s Palliative Care Volunteers (DSPCV).

Palliative Care Week raises awareness and improves the community’s understanding of what palliative care is, and how it can help people with a life-limiting illness, and support their families and carers.

The theme for this year’s Palliative Care Week is “What’s Your Plan?”.

More than half of all Australians, despite saying they should make plans and talk about their end of life wishes, do not.

“It is very important to recognise Palliative Care Week,” said DSPCV Coordinator Annette O’Neill. “It affects all of us.”

Volunteers help local people with transport to medical appointments and with linen and equipment, and support and organise respite for carers and families.

During Palliative Care Week, Davey and Olsen’s window in Dowling Street will have a display with information on how the community can get involved.

On Wednesday 14 May, a morning tea will be held for clients and past and present carers, volunteers and community supporters.

Many local people have been involved as volunteers over the years, and these past members are asked to call Annette on 0457 846806 to register attendance.

On 17 May, there will be a street stall and competition outside Lovey’s Dungog IGA, with prizes of a hamper of goodies and vouchers donated by local businesses and community members, as well as a handmade patchwork quilt.

This year, the church service and supper at Christ Church Anglican Church Dungog will be on Sunday 18 May, at 6.30pm.

Everyone in the Dungog Shire is invited to attend in remembrance of loved ones who have passed away.
