NSW Ambulance paramedics commenced CPR when they attended the scene, however Mr Nicholson was unable to be revived.

The driver of the vehicle, a 32-year-old woman, was uninjured but taken to Maitland Hospital for mandatory drug and alcohol testing.

Mr Nicholson was well-known and respected across the region for his community work, in particular for his long-standing dedication to the Dungog Show and Rodeo.

In 2024, AgShows NSW said Mr Nicholson “truly exemplifies dedication” to the local show society, highlighting his “invaluable wealth of knowledge”.

In the days since Mr Nicholson’s passing, Dungog Show Society Vice President Bruce Neilson has offered an emotional tribute to a community legend.

“For almost 25 years, Owen served as Secretary of the Dungog Show, a role he carried out with remarkable dedication,” Mr Neilson said.

“During that time, he worked tirelessly to maintain the showgrounds and preserve the heritage of an event that has long been a cornerstone of community life in the district.

“His efforts helped ensure that the show continued to bring people together, celebrating the traditions, agriculture, and community pride that define the region.”

Mr Neilson’s statement can be read in full in the Letters section of this newspaper.

An investigation into Mr Nicholson’s death is underway by the Port Stephens-Hunter Police District.
