HEAVY vehicle drivers travelling through the Upper Hunter now have 10 new places to stop, rest, and reduce their risk of a fatigue-related crash.
The NSW Government has expanded its green reflector program with new sites along sections of the Golden and New England highways.
It is expected this will make it easier for truck drivers to identify suitable stopping locations, particularly at night or during times of poor visibility.
The latest sites are located near Denman, Mount Thorley, Warkworth, Ardglen, Liddell, Muswellbrook, Wingen and Murulla.
Minister for the Hunter Yasmin Catley said fatigue remained a major risk on regional roads.
“Driver fatigue remains one of the biggest killers on our roads and the reality is that too many people push on when they should be pulling over,” Ms Catley said.
“A 15-minute power nap or rest break could be the difference between arriving safely or never making it to your destination.
“Fatigue can be just as deadly as speeding or drink-driving.”
Green reflector markers are fitted to roadside guideposts before informal heavy vehicle rest areas, providing drivers with a clear visual signal that a safe place to pull over is nearby.
The initiative forms part of the NSW Government’s $11.9 million Heavy Vehicle Rest Stop Minor Works Program.
It’s delivering upgrades to rest areas across the state, including improved lighting, signage, pedestrian safety measures and amenities.
