Business Hunter celebrates 140 years of growth

BUSINESS Hunter is celebrating a significant milestone, marking 140 years of supporting industry, enterprise and economic development across Newcastle and the Hunter Region.

Founded in 1886 when a group of local business leaders gathered at Newcastle’s Great Northern Hotel to establish a Chamber of Commerce, the organisation has played a central role in shaping the region’s economic future.

Federal Member for Newcastle Sharon Claydon recently acknowledged the achievement in Parliament, describing Business Hunter as a longstanding champion for local businesses and jobs.

“I want to celebrate an extraordinary milestone: 140 years of Business Hunter,” Ms Claydon said.

“Since 1886, Business Hunter has been the driving force for industry, enterprise and economic growth across our region.”

Among the Chamber’s original members were prominent figures including Frederic Ash, whose buildings remain part of Newcastle’s CBD, coal industry leader John Brown, and biscuit manufacturer William Arnott.

Over the past 140 years, the organisation has evolved alongside the region, changing its name several times before adopting the Business Hunter brand in 2020 to better reflect the diverse range of businesses it represents.

Ms Claydon said the organisation had remained a consistent advocate despite significant economic and social change.

“Over 140 years, our economy has evolved dramatically.

“Industries have changed, communities have grown and new challenges have emerged,” she said.

“But, through it all, Business Hunter has remained a steadfast voice for local businesses and local jobs.”

She said the anniversary was an opportunity to reflect on the organisation’s achievements while looking ahead to future opportunities.

“The Hunter is helping to lead Australia’s economic transformation, and organisations like Business Hunter will continue to play a vital role in ensuring our region seizes every opportunity ahead,” Ms Claydon said.
